Sunday’s Technical Race course with maps, distances and format descriptions.
We are running a technical race with 4 buoy turns per lap, starting from South Sands (Salcombe) with a Battle of the Paddle style format involving in and out through the surf and beach runs. The technical race will be held on Sunday 27th October 2019. The course itself is around 7.2km (4.5 miles) we have two possible course depending on conditions, the first will be our proposed course being more technical and the second a safer option if we have bigger waves and swell this second option stays out of the main entrance of the estuary, however, water craft do still use this area and will be warned of an upcoming race in the ‘notice to mariners’ issued by the harbour master as well as by race marshals on the water on the day.
Route 1:
Competitors will start between two Waterborn flags on the beach at South Sands with board and paddle in hand and run down to the water’s edge. Leashes are only mandatory while on the water so if someone wants to run unleashed and then leash up at the waters this is ok. They will make their way passed Bass Rock to the right of the beach heading out towards the sea and will make an Anti Clockwise turn round the marker and head towards Blackstone Rocks and Sunny Cove, Competitors can either stay closer to the East Portlemouth side and catch the waves from the bar in or nearer the channel for calmer water. Another Race buoy will be placed at Sunny Cove again an Anti Clockwise turn will take them towards the surf zone at North Sands but first must cross the Estuary, Marshal Boats will advise traffic as needed to ensure if it safe for boats and competitors to cross. a race marker will be placed just passed the breaking waves for another Anti Clockwise turn to then punch back out through the waves. On the landward side of Poundstone rocks will be our only Clockwise turn which will then line you up for the final section back towards South Sands. At the water’s edge you will unleash and run with paddle in hand around both of the starting/finishing flags before returning to your board to leash up for your remaining laps. There will be 3 laps in total on the final lap you will unleash at the water’s edge and then run with your paddle between the two flags to finish.
